New reports to the Department of Health (DH) show that Northwest Trusts are failing to deal with the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) despite the region gaining additional funding and time as a pathfinder region, the President of Royal College of Surgeons is to tell a meeting of senior clinicians in Liverpool on Thursday July 2nd. The figures will be an embarrassment to the Government as they reveal the extent of the problems facing the region’s hospitals on August 1st.

(SBi), an orthopedics company focused exclusively on technologies and treatments for the small bones & joints, announced that it has sold a total of $108 million of Series D Preferred Stock in a series of private equity financings. The most recent of these financings closed in April 2009. The Series D financing is believed to be one of the largest ever private equity capital investments in an orthopedics company.

A Hertfordshire GP who encouraged patients to quit smoking by telling them their true "lung age" has won a prestigious award from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).
Dr Gary Parkes carried out the study in five GP practices in Hertfordshire, involving 561 smokers over the age of 35. After using spirometry tests to estimate their lung age, he found that giving smokers this information significantly improved the likelihood of their quitting smoking.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has today (24 June) published guidance on cetuximab for the treatment of recurrent and/or metastatic (where the cancer has spread) squamous cell cancer of the head and neck. The guidance does not recommend cetuximab in combination with platinum- based chemotherapy as a treatment option for patients with this type of head and neck cancer.
